A man chased his ex-partner into the bathroom of her house and brutally beat her, leaving her battered and bruised. Kurt Taylor, from Ely, Cardiff, was sentenced to 19 months in prison for the attack. The assault occurred on the night of August 5, when Taylor breached a restraining order and went to his former partner’s house in Llanrumney. Also present were the ex, three children, and Taylor’s own mother. Taylor’s ex was alerted by shouts and her dog barking. She ran into the bathroom to escape, but Taylor forced his way in, punched her repeatedly, and verbally abused her.
The court heard that Taylor’s assault continued despite his mother intervening briefly. The children in the house witnessed the horrific scene, screaming and crying. Following the attack, Taylor left before eventually handing himself in to the police. On the same night, he used a wooden bat to vandalise a male friend’s van, causing over £1,000 in damages. This was preceded by threatening messages to the male friend. Taylor had pleaded guilty to assault, criminal damage, and breaching a restraining order.
During sentencing, it was revealed that Taylor had a history of violent offences, with previous convictions for affray, robbery, domestic-related battery, and breaches of court orders. Despite expressing remorse for his actions and indicating a willingness to turn his life around, he was deemed a dangerous offender. Taylor was sentenced to 19 months in prison for assault and breaching the restraining order, to be served concurrently. The judge believed this standard sentence was sufficient to manage the risk posed by Taylor.
The court highlighted the concerning fact that Taylor had shown little improvement despite previous sentences. It was noted that he posed a high risk to partners and had issues with former partners forming new relationships. With a one-third discount for pleading guilty, Taylor was sentenced to serve time in prison. Domestic abuse helplines are available for those in need of support and advice in Wales.
