Residents in Carmarthenshire are facing hefty fines for putting their bins out incorrectly, as figures released by the local county council show. Carmarthenshire Council has taken a strong stance on waste offences, aiming to maintain a clean and safe environment through issuing fixed penalty notices (FPNs) and enforcement actions. In August, several residents were penalised for various offences, such as leaving bins out on the wrong day or putting inappropriate items in recycling bags.
The penalties ranged from £100 to over £600, with individuals fined for actions like littering, fly-tipping, vehicle abandonment, and improper waste disposal. The council issued fines for offences including leaving a cardboard box on the ground, discarding household waste at recycling facilities, and putting contaminated items in recycling bags. Enforcement notices were also issued for violations of waste disposal regulations, highlighting the council’s dedication to environmental protection.
Aled Vaughan Owen, the council’s cabinet member for climate change and sustainability, emphasised the importance of adhering to waste disposal regulations and reporting any offences. Despite these efforts, the council faced criticism for disruptions in waste collection around the August bank holiday weekend, resulting in overflowing rubbish outside homes due to staffing shortages.
Following resident complaints, Edward Thomas, cabinet member for transport and waste services, acknowledged the issues and pledged to review the waste collection process for future bank holidays.
