Plans to turn a former strip club in Cardiff into a nightclub and event venue have been approved by Cardiff Council’s licensing sub-committee. The basement at 93 St Mary Street, previously known as Silks @ 93 Gentlemans Club and Late Bar, will now operate under the new name Six Feet Under. The venue, owned by Nine Yards S.Wales Limited, has had its sexual entertainment licence revoked.
Local councillors, including Cllr Norma Mackie from Cathays, welcomed the change in land use but expressed concerns about the potential risks associated with removing seating, which could lead to prolonged drinking periods. Matteo Cutrupi, a director at Nine Yards S.Wales Limited, assured that the venue had maintained order without incidents under temporary event notices. The venue plans to host electronic music events and DJs about six times a month, with additional plans to use the space as a music studio and practice area on non-event days.
With a capacity for 150 people, Six Feet Under is permitted to stay open until 6am daily. However, demand decreases closer to closing time, ensuring crowd sizes taper off as operations wind down. To address safety concerns, an agreement with South Wales Police includes requirements for door staff and a dispersal policy to manage exit crowds. Cllr Mackie raised the issue of vertical drinking but Cutrupi highlighted that a sister venue operating a similar concept did not pose additional risks.
Despite reservations, the council approved the transformation of the strip club into a nightclub and event venue. The decision marks a shift towards a new entertainment purpose for the property, offering a diverse range of functions and activities for patrons. As the venue prepares to transition, it aims to provide a vibrant nightlife option while adhering to safety regulations and fostering a positive atmosphere for guests.
