Expert debunks biggest energy-saving myth ahead of gas and electricity price hike

An expert has dispelled the biggest energy-saving myth ahead of the impending gas and electricity price hike. Energy prices have soared almost a third higher than pre-Russia-Ukraine invasion levels, with a further 10% increase expected in October. Under the new energy price cap, the typical annual dual-fuel bill could reach £1,717 per year.

As the UK Savings Week unfolds to promote prudent financial habits, Andy Kerr, founder of BOXT, debunks common misconceptions about saving on household and energy bills. Firstly, he clarifies that turning the thermostat to the max does not heat the room quicker but merely adjusts the target temperature. Thus, opting for a programmable or smart thermostat may be beneficial.

Another widespread myth that Kerr addresses is the notion that keeping the heating on low all day saves money. Contrary to this belief, it is more efficient to heat the home only when needed to minimise energy loss. Kerr suggests using a timer to regulate your heating system effectively.

Moreover, the myth that leaving the hot water timer on all day saves money is debunked by Kerr, who recommends heating water only when necessary to enhance cost-effectiveness and energy efficiency. He advises setting the boiler thermostat to 65 degrees for optimal balance.

Regarding radiator colours, Kerr dispels the idea that painting radiators black increases heat radiation efficiency. Instead, he recommends installing thermostatic radiator valves in each room and using reflective panels behind radiators to prevent heat loss through walls.

Kerr also addresses the misconception that leaving lights on rather than turning them off saves energy. He emphasizes the importance of turning off lights when not in use and switching to energy-efficient LED bulbs to reduce carbon footprint.

Lastly, Kerr clarifies that most heat loss is through uninsulated walls, not windows. Understanding these energy-saving principles could help households navigate rising energy costs effectively.
