Bids have surpassed £500,000 in an auction for a glove that Muhammad Ali is said to have deliberately torn in his “most controversial fight.” The valuable boxing glove, estimated to be worth up to £6 million, is up for sale with auctioneer Stuart Bull. Stuart claims the left-handed glove was worn by Ali during his notorious 1963 bout against Henry Cooper, where Ali’s trainer, Angelo Dundee, reportedly widened a rip in the glove to give Ali time to recover after being knocked down.
Already attracting bids of £500,000, Stuart anticipates the glove could fetch between £4 million and £6 million. Stuart, of Stuart Bull Auctions in Somerset, has conducted extensive research over eight months to verify the glove’s authenticity, compiling a 64-page dossier. He expressed excitement at the prospect of auctioning the glove, emphasising its significance in Ali’s career and its status as a key item in boxing history.
The auction, scheduled to conclude on October 31st, aims to showcase the glove to the world, with Stuart emphasising its importance as a pivotal artefact in Ali’s legacy. Stuart asserts that the glove he is selling is the genuine article, supported by statements and evidence gathered during the authentication process.
