Skygazers in Wales are in for a treat this week as they can witness a breathtaking meteor shower lighting up the night sky. Known as the Draconid meteor shower or Giacobinids, the celestial event is expected to peak between Tuesday and Wednesday, spanning from Sunday to Thursday. Unlike most meteor showers that are best viewed in the early hours, the Draconids offer the best spectacle during the evening hours, after dusk.
To fully appreciate this phenomenon, experts recommend finding a location with an unobstructed view of the horizon and minimal light pollution. The Draconid meteor shower occurs annually and originates from the debris of comet 21 P/Giacobini-Zinner, which completes an orbit around the Sun every six-and-a-half years. These meteors, sometimes referred to as Giacobinids, owe their name to Michel Giacobini, the astronomer who first identified the comet producing the meteor shower.
During optimal viewing conditions, spectators may witness up to 10 meteors per hour streaking across the night sky. Dr. Minjae Kim, a research fellow from the Department of Physics at the University of Warwick, advised that the shower’s radiant point is at its highest in the evening sky, making it a rare sight best observed post-sunset rather than in the early morning.
As the moon will be in a waxing crescent to first quarter phase, providing relatively dark skies, visibility of the meteor shower is expected to be enhanced. Skywatchers are encouraged to seek out areas with minimal light pollution, such as rural settings or parks away from city lights. Allowing the eyes to adjust to the darkness for about 20-30 minutes can improve night vision, enhancing the overall viewing experience.
