A young British boy, 12-year-old Lawrence Pahollaria, contracted sepsis and was diagnosed with Salmonella Heidelberg after a family holiday to a four-star resort in Egypt. Lawrence, along with his family, stayed at a hotel in Hurghada with tour operator easyJet. While on holiday, the family experienced gastric symptoms, but Lawrence’s condition worsened upon returning home to North London. He began vomiting and had diarrhoea, leading to a visit to A&E, where he was diagnosed with sepsis and salmonella.
Lawrence received intravenous antibiotics and fluids during a five-day hospital stay, which included one overnight stay. His mother, Trudi Law, expressed how terrifying it was to learn about Lawrence’s sepsis diagnosis, stating they were fortunate to come out of the ordeal relatively unscathed. The family had arrived at the resort on July 20 for a two-week vacation, during which Lawrence’s sister, Florianna, and mother also fell ill with similar symptoms.
Trudi highlighted the poor hygiene standards at the hotel and regretted not insisting on moving to another location. Following the experience, Trudi sought legal advice from Irwin Mitchell to investigate the family’s illness. Specialist lawyer Sarita Sharma emphasized the significance of addressing gastric illnesses promptly to prevent life-threatening complications like sepsis.
An easyJet spokesperson stated that ensuring customers’ health and safety is a priority and mentioned that the hotel accommodation meets high health and safety standards. Since the matter is now a legal issue, easyJet refrained from providing further comments. Lawrence’s family is seeking answers and support, with a call for others who stayed at the same hotel and may have relevant information to come forward.
The family’s legal representatives are determined to provide the necessary support and investigate any underlying issues to improve standards for future travelers. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of untreated gastric illnesses and the importance of maintaining hygiene standards in hospitality establishments.
