A carer has been sentenced to life in prison for the brutal killing of a 90-year-old woman she was meant to be caring for. Jayne Hill, aged 52, carried out the horrific crime against Myra Thompson by striking her over the head with a metal flask before smothering her with a pillow. The attack took place in April, shortly after Hill was caught on camera stealing money from Mrs Thompson.
The court heard how Hill waited outside Mrs Thompson’s home in Spital, Wirral, until the lights in her bedroom were switched off. She then entered the house with the intention of silencing her victim, who had witnessed the theft. The judge described the violence as sudden, ferocious, and clearly premeditated, demonstrating a complete breach of trust. Hill was sentenced to a minimum of 22 and a half years in jail.
Detective Inspector Dave Jones expressed shock at Hill’s actions, emphasizing the betrayal of trust towards a vulnerable elderly person. Hill showed no remorse for her actions and was also guilty of stealing from other elderly individuals she cared for. Mrs Thompson’s family expressed relief that justice had been served, highlighting the distress caused by the heinous crime.
The niece of the victim, Anne Charters, shared the family’s anguish over the violent and senseless attack on her vulnerable aunt. The family expressed hope for closure following the sentencing.
