Several people have tragically lost their lives in incidents in the English Channel, including a child who was reported to have been “trampled to death”. These incidents occurred following two small boat episodes off the shores of France. The French Interior Minister, Bruno Retailleau, shared details about the events on X, previously known as Twitter. Retailleau expressed, “Today several people died trying to cross the Channel. A child was trampled to death in a boat.” He emphasised the severity of the situation, calling it a “terrible tragedy” that highlights the risks involved in such crossings. Retailleau condemned the people smugglers responsible for organising these perilous journeys, stating that the government will escalate efforts to combat these criminal activities.
Local newspaper La Voix Du Nord confirmed that three individuals lost their lives near Calais and one near Boulogne. Rescue operations are currently underway. The AFP news agency reported that a migrant vessel bound for Britain issued a distress call on Saturday morning. Rescuers managed to save 14 individuals on board, including the child who was later found injured and airlifted to a hospital in France. The remaining passengers continued their voyage towards the UK.
The tragic events unfolded as the Home Office revealed that 395 migrants successfully crossed the English Channel and arrived in the UK on Friday. These individuals, who arrived in seven separate boats, bring the year’s total to 25,639, compared to 25,330 at the same time last year. The UK, along with other G7 nations, has devised an anti-smuggling action plan to strengthen collaboration in addressing this issue, following discussions in Italy. The plan includes joint investigations and intelligence-sharing to combat criminal smuggling activities.
A spokesperson for the Home Office affirmed the commitment to end hazardous small boat crossings and disrupt the operations of people-smuggling gangs. The government aims to enhance border security, dismantle criminal networks, and ensure that those responsible for exploiting vulnerable individuals face justice. Measures include bolstering personnel both domestically and internationally, with the newly established Border Security Command strengthening global partnerships to tackle these criminal enterprises effectively.
