Judge asks if ‘coward and bully’ has shown his partner the horrific injuries he caused his ex

A judge has branded Oliver Torkington as “a coward and a bully” who maliciously attacked his ex-girlfriend, inflicting horrific injuries. Torkington, of Pembroke Road, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, faced trial and was convicted of assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH) and strangulation. The brutal attack occurred in Torkington’s flat in St Clears near Carmarthen, following a night out where he became jealous of his partner speaking to a doorman.

During the assault, Torkington, aged 39, punched, stamped, strangled, and repeatedly whipped his partner with a thin piece of metal. The victim sustained a broken finger and continues to suffer from ringing in her ear, a reminder of the violence inflicted upon her. Torkington also seized his partner’s phone, preventing her from seeking help during the assault.

The court heard that Torkington had a history of 16 previous convictions for 24 offences, including multiple instances of assault. Despite claiming self-defence, the judge dismissed Torkington’s arguments as baseless, sentencing him to two years and nine months in prison for the ABH and strangulation charges. The judge remarked on Torkington’s cowardice in refusing to acknowledge his actions.

Torkington’s barrister cited his struggles with substance abuse and unstable mental state as contributing factors to the violence. She highlighted his efforts in rehabilitation, including sobriety for six months and mindfulness classes. The judge questioned Torkington’s true remorse, expressing concern about his behaviour towards his victim and urging him to reflect on the impact of his actions.

In response to Torkington’s plan to relocate to north Wales upon release, the judge issued a five-year restraining order to protect the victim. The court concluded with a stark reminder to Torkington, asking him to ponder how he would feel if his own daughter suffered as his victim did. The case serves as a grim reminder of the consequences of domestic violence and the importance of seeking help.
