Concertgoers who attended an open-air gig in Cardiff Bay during the bank holiday weekend have voiced their discontent and highlighted their concerns about overcrowding and mismanagement at the event. The performance featured English singer-songwriter Becky Hill as part of The Bay Series concert series set in the custom-built Alexandra Head venue, where previous artists like McFly, Sam Ryder, and Tiesto had also performed earlier in the summer.
Following the Saturday evening concert, attendees took to social media to express their frustrations, with one individual describing the event setup as “shocking” and raising safety concerns due to the excessive crowd. Another concertgoer mentioned issues with the VIP queue being unclear and poorly managed. Several attendees criticised the event for being overcrowded and poorly managed compared to previous Bay Series events.
Emma Upchurch from Pontypridd, who attended the event, recounted her experience of feeling overcrowded near the stage and witnessing incidents of people being crushed. She also highlighted the challenges faced with long queues for facilities compared to previous years. Linda Jones, another attendee, shared her disappointment with the VIP experience, citing unclear directions, insufficient seating, and the removal of certain VIP features due to adverse weather.
In response to the complaints, organisers defended their preparations, mentioning that they had provided industry-standard facilities and promptly addressed toilet queue issues on the day of the event. They further explained that adverse weather conditions had impacted certain VIP features and reiterated their compliance with health and safety protocols set in consultation with responsible authorities.
Attendees like Linda emphasised that access to VIP amenities somewhat improved their experience despite the overall challenges faced. Concerns from attendees, including fears for future events at the venue, were raised following the unsettling experiences encountered during the Becky Hill concert. With these feedback and responses, organisers aim to ensure better event management and improved attendee experiences in future concerts at the venue.
