In a recent report by Wales Online, a dietician provided expert advice on crafting a nutritious school lunchbox for children. The ‘ideal’ lunchbox, according to Dietician Lucy Kerrison, should include a protein-filled sandwich, a veggie snack, fruit, and dairy products. Kerrison highlighted the importance of incorporating one portion of starch, such as bread, pasta or rice, one to two portions of vegetables like cucumber or carrot, and a portion of fruit like an apple or banana. Additionally, yoghurts, cheeses, and protein sources like meat, fish, or beans were recommended.
Research involving 800 parents who pack lunches for their children revealed that the average child’s lunchbox typically consists of a sandwich, a pack of crisps, and an apple. Concerns about balancing nutrition and meeting children’s preferences were evident, with 60 per cent of parents expressing worries about the nutritional value of packed lunches. The survey also found that sandwiches, particularly with ham or cheese fillings, were popular choices, while yoghurts, biscuits, and chocolate bars were common sweet treats included.
Warburtons, a bread-making company, collaborated with Dietician Kerrison and Girls Aloud singer and mum of three, Kimberley Walsh, to promote the concept of wholesome, balanced school lunches. Kerrison reassured parents that sandwiches offer a practical and economical way to provide essential nutrients like fibre, B vitamins, calcium, healthy fats, and proteins needed for a child’s school day energy. Kerrison emphasised the simplicity and nutritional benefits of basic lunch options like sandwiches, especially during busy mornings.
Despite the prevalent inclusion of sandwiches in lunchboxes, the research revealed that 75 per cent of parents were uncertain about the healthiness of this choice. However, 79 per cent still packed sandwiches as the main component, even if they doubted their nutritional value. Jonathan Warburton from the bread-making company commented on the pressure parents face in preparing daily lunches, emphasizing the nutritional adequacy of sandwiches. Walsh, acknowledging the challenges of providing nutrient-rich lunches, endorsed sandwiches as a convenient and nutritious option for children.
As parents navigate the task of packing school lunches, the collaboration between Warburtons, Dietician Kerrison, and Walsh aims to educate parents on maximising nutrition in simple lunch choices like sandwiches. The initiative seeks to offer recipe inspiration and practical tips to ease the lunch-preparation process for parents as the back-to-school season approaches.
In conclusion, the advice from the dietician, alongside the insight from the research and the endorsement of basic lunch options, underscores the importance of mindful food choices in creating nutritious school lunches for children.
