Taxpayers in Conwy County are facing the burden of a £240,000 annual bill for a purpose-built HGV depot that cannot house trucks. Despite spending around £2 million on the depot since the lease commenced in May 2016, the council is locked into paying £20,000 per month for a building that falls short of its intended use.
The finance and resources overview and scrutiny committee of Conwy County Council will convene at Bodlondeb to explore the future of the ill-fitting depot at Mochdre Commerce Park. The building has become a white elephant, with its usage deviating from the initial plan to store HGVs due to its inadequate floor design. However, the space was repurposed during the pandemic to store emergency materials and even served as a temporary morgue if needed.
A councillor, Janet Finch-Saunders, expressed shock at the council’s continued investment in a building that is not fit for purpose and has cost millions of pounds to taxpayers. Concerns have been raised about the lack of transparency and accountability in the council’s decision-making process, with calls for more clarity regarding the liability to taxpayers.
An independent report commissioned by Conwy County Council revealed poor leadership, policy neglect, and accountability lapses within the council. Former chief executive Iwan Davies described the decision to acquire the unsuitable building as regrettable, while councillor Anne McCaffrey labelled it a series of errors. The council’s finance and resources overview scrutiny committee will meet to discuss the matter further.
