A dietitian has advised women over the age of 40 to focus on three key food groups to assist with weight loss during perimenopause and menopause. Weight gain is a common concern during this period, even starting up to ten years before menopause. The dietitian recommended incorporating lean proteins, good fats, and fibre-rich foods into their diet to help manage cravings and promote weight loss.
Amie Alexander, a registered dietitian at Nutri Peak, emphasised the importance of these food groups for satiation, satisfaction, and maintaining muscle mass as we age. She highlighted that the hormonal changes during menopause can slow down metabolism and lead to increased body fat, particularly around the midsection. By adjusting their nutrition to include foods like chicken, fish, legumes, avocados, and olive oil, women may find relief from certain symptoms and support hormone production.
The expert also pointed out that fibre-rich foods can help stabilise blood sugar levels and reduce cravings associated with menopause. While concentrating on these food groups can be beneficial, it is always recommended to consult a GP if experiencing difficulties during this life stage. By making these dietary adjustments, women may find it easier to manage weight and improve overall wellbeing as they navigate through perimenopause and menopause.
