In a dramatic incident, a lorry driver found himself trapped in mid-air as the ramp onto the Calais to Dover ferry closed while vehicles were still boarding. The chaotic scene unfolded as cars waited to board the Irish Ferries vessel from Calais to Dover shortly after 8 pm on Sunday. The ramp unexpectedly started closing, lifting a van at least three metres above ground level, leaving the driver stranded.
Adrian Cann, 36, who was in his car two vehicles behind, described the tense situation, expressing concern that the van might roll backward. After about five minutes of commotion, staff intervened to assist. Eventually, the ferry departed for Dover at 8:30 pm, approximately 20 minutes behind schedule. Adrian shared his surprise at the lack of on-site staff guidance during the unsettling incident.
The driver in the elevated van was safely directed out by staff once the ramp was lowered, allowing vehicles to resume boarding.
