DWP could check bank accounts of people on these four benefits in new crackdown

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is poised to increase its scrutiny of four benefits in a fresh crackdown on fraud. With the Labour Party-led government in charge, the DWP is anticipated to receive enhanced powers to examine bank accounts. Financial planner Steven Kibbel from Gold IRA Companies highlighted, “I believe these new abilities to check claimants’ bank accounts will primarily target means-tested benefits.”

Kibbel suggested that Universal Credit is likely to be a key focus due to its wide prevalence and a savings threshold of £16,000. Other benefits under potential scrutiny could include Jobseeker’s Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance, and Housing Benefit. Financial advisor Yiannis Zourmpanos from Bountii expressed reservations about privacy regarding the Government’s access to bank accounts, deeming it invasive. He acknowledged the necessity of public fund allocation oversight but cautioned about the impact on legitimate claimants.

Zourmpanos emphasised the importance of maintaining detailed financial records, reporting any changes promptly to the DWP, particularly in cases of foreign travel while claiming benefits. He urged individuals to seek advice from welfare rights organisations or advisors when unsure. The increasing monitoring of financial patterns by banks could lead to inquiries for unusual transactions or discrepancies in declared income. Zourmpanos advised caution and awareness of benefit regulations to evade potential pitfalls in claiming benefits.

To support those reliant on benefits, he underscored the significance of staying informed about entitlements and responsibilities, especially in light of evolving financial situations. As the DWP intensifies its efforts to combat benefit fraud, claimants are urged to exercise vigilance and transparency in their financial dealings to avoid inadvertent scrutiny and potential complications in benefit claims.
