The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is set to send letters to notify individuals that a key benefit, Employment Support Allowance (ESA), is being phased out. Some recipients, including those who also receive Personal Independence Payments (PIP), are urged to take immediate action before Christmas. ESA recipients are required to transition to Universal Credit (UC) as ESA is being replaced by UC. This change will not occur automatically, and individuals must apply for UC themselves.
The DWP has initiated the process by dispatching migration notices to ESA recipients starting from September. Claimants have three months from the date of the letter to switch to UC to avoid disruption in payments. The timing of these changes aligns with the festive season, adding pressure on claimants to manage their financial arrangements promptly. Although UC does not directly impact PIP, it is crucial for dual claimants to stay informed as the transition from ESA to UC unfolds.
The government advised affected individuals: “Move to Universal Credit if you get a migration notice letter. As one or more of your benefits will be ending soon, you need to move to Universal Credit.” Claimants must claim UC within three months from the date of the letter to continue receiving financial support. This shift is part of the wider strategy to phase out six legacy benefits by the DWP. It is paramount for recipients to act promptly to ensure a smooth transition to the new system and avoid any interruptions in their benefits.
