Neath Port Talbot’s Birth Centre reopened after a three-year closure, just in time for Isabella Olding to have the water birth she had been hoping for. Isabella, who was nine days overdue, waited for the birth centre to reopen so she could have a more relaxed and straightforward birth experience compared to her first delivery. With the support of the midwives, Isabella gave birth to little Rafaellos at 3:50 am, weighing 8lbs 1oz.
The birth centre had been closed due to staffing challenges in 2021, but following a £750,000 financial boost and the recruitment of 35 new staff members, it welcomed its first baby since reopening. Isabella expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to have a water birth with the assistance of freestanding midwives, which she believed made the birth experience much better than her first.
Isaac, the proud father, highlighted the difference in atmosphere between the Birth Centre and the hospital where their first child was born, noting the calmness and reassurance provided by the staff. Midwife matron Rhiannon Griffiths shared her joy at the centre’s reopening and encouraged pregnant women to explore their birthplace options.
