Neath Port Talbot Council has approved funding of £10,000 for improvements to be made to Glynneath Town Council’s local park this month. The decision was made during the monthly cabinet meeting on September 11, 2024. The funding is part of the council’s Community Councils Minor Projects Scheme, aimed at assisting local community councils in carrying out minor capital projects. This funding is a component of a larger project that aims to transform Glynneath Miners Welfare Park into a “destination park.” The total project is estimated to exceed £800,000, focusing on enhancing existing facilities and introducing new ones to benefit the community for years to come.
The first phase of the project will involve converting a former bowling green into a play and learning space for children aged pre-school to 11 years. Additionally, three existing tennis courts will be refurbished, and a fourth court will be transformed into a multi-use games area for activities such as 5-a-side football, netball, and hockey. The Glynneath Town Council’s application highlighted the lack of major investment in the park for over 30 years. Despite this, the park remains a valued community asset, with residents expressing a desire for its improvement.
Another approved application will see funding allocated to Onllwyn Community Council to develop an outdoor toddler and family area with a playground on Roman Road, Banwen. These initiatives aim to create enhanced recreational spaces for local residents. The Glynneath project, in particular, seeks to revitalise the park, meeting the needs of the community and ensuring its long-term sustainability for future generations.
