Home Bargains and B&Q have both announced significant store closures on the same day, impacting their respective chains of outlets across the UK. Home Bargains revealed plans to close all its 600 stores for an extended period over the winter season. As part of this decision, the discount homeware brand will shut its doors for three days during the festive period, including Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day. Additionally, all Home Bargains shops will have early closure at 5pm on Christmas Eve.
Similarly, DIY retailer B&Q has confirmed the closure of its 300-plus UK branches on Boxing Day. The store closures aim to provide staff with the opportunity to relax and spend time with their families during the holiday season. B&Q will also close its stores early on Christmas Eve, with branches across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland shutting down at 4pm instead of the usual 8pm. Furthermore, most B&Q outlets will operate on reduced hours on New Year’s Day, with exceptions for stores in Scotland, Jersey, and Guernsey that will be closed.
Several other retailers, including Aldi, The Range, Wilko, John Lewis, Waitrose, and Homebase, have also opted to close their stores on Boxing Day. This move has been welcomed by Guy Thornton, Founder of Practice Aptitude Tests, as a positive step towards prioritising staff well-being and work-life balance in the retail sector. Thornton emphasised the importance of allowing retail employees time off during busy periods like Christmas to ensure their happiness and health.
Overall, store closures over the festive period reflect a growing trend among retailers to give staff time off for rest and relaxation. The decision aligns with the Christmas Day (Trading) Act 2004, which mandates the closure of almost all stores on December 25. These closures allow employees to enjoy the holiday season with their loved ones and recharge before returning to work.
