Former BBC presenter Huw Edwards has been sentenced after admitting to possessing indecent images of children. The 63-year-old, who left the BBC in April, admitted to three counts of making indecent images of children, with one involving a child as young as seven. Edwards will appear at Westminster Magistrates Court today to be sentenced for the offences.
The court heard that Edwards had 377 images on his WhatsApp between December 2020 and August 2021, which were sent to him by 25-year-old convicted paedophile Alex Williams. One of the images found on Edwards’ phone depicted a child aged between seven and nine. Edwards, who was a prominent news anchor for the BBC, was paid over £470,000 by the corporation during his time there.
The BBC faced criticism for continuing to pay Edwards while the criminal investigation was ongoing, but defended its decision by stating that he had not been charged during his employment. In August, the BBC requested Edwards to return his salary from the period he was under investigation, amounting to over £200,000. Edwards is set to be sentenced today from 10 am.
