A young woman who overcame significant challenges to pursue her dreams has shared her inspiring journey from growing up in a council estate to becoming a student at the prestigious University of Oxford. Chloe Pomfret, originally from Wythenshawe, Manchester, entered foster care during her early school years and later faced homelessness after the death of her grandfather. At the age of 16, Chloe found herself sofa surfing and living on the streets before her school stepped in to help secure supported accommodation for her.
Despite the obstacles she faced, Chloe remained determined to pursue her passion for education, specifically in biology. Falling in love with the Human Sciences course at Oxford University, Chloe applied and was eventually accepted into St Catherine’s College. While studying at Oxford, Chloe encountered challenges as some of her peers labeled her ‘council estate Chloe’, reflecting on her working-class background.
Acknowledging the stigma, Chloe expressed pride in her roots, highlighting that high-profile figures like deputy prime minister Angela Rayner and footballer Marcus Rashford also hailed from council estates near her own upbringing. Chloe’s journey to Oxford symbolises her determination and resilience, breaking stereotypes and defying expectations.
Reflecting on her unconventional path to higher education, Chloe emphasised the importance of support and encouragement for students from disadvantaged backgrounds to consider university as a viable option. Her story serves as an inspiration for others, demonstrating that with determination and hard work, anyone can achieve their aspirations, regardless of their circumstances.
Chloe’s experience at Oxford has not only broadened her academic horizons but also empowered her with confidence to advocate for equal opportunities in education. As she continues her studies, Chloe aims to inspire and support other individuals facing similar challenges, encouraging them to believe in their potential and pursue their dreams with perseverance and resilience.
Chloe’s remarkable journey from council estate upbringing to Oxford University exemplifies the transformative power of education and the strength of the human spirit in overcoming adversity. Her story serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration, illustrating that with determination and a supportive community, individuals can surpass limitations and achieve remarkable success.
