A child abuser who carried out despicable acts on a young girl later left money for her, creating a complex emotional aftermath for the victim. Michael Ellis, 57, from Pengam, Caerphilly, attempted to rape and sexually assault the seven-year-old victim. The abuse, described as repeated and incessant, included indecent touching and attempted indecent acts. Ellis warned the victim that no one would believe her if she reported the abuse, causing her deep guilt and shame.
During the sentencing hearing at Newport Crown Court, the victim revealed that the abuse led her to attempt to take her own life. Ellis also left money for the victim after the abuse, complicating her feelings about receiving gifts. Despite denying the offences initially, Ellis was found guilty of one count of attempted rape and 14 counts of indecent assault. The court heard he had a previous caution for criminal damage.
In her victim impact statement, the victim shared the profound impact the abuse had on her mental health, leading to depression and difficulties with trust and relationships. She struggled with accepting gifts and suffered from flashbacks and stress related to the investigation and court process. The victim expressed that completing the statement was a form of closure for her.
In mitigation, the court considered Ellis’s childhood difficulties with learning and education, as well as the fact that decades had passed since the offences. Despite this, Ellis was sentenced to 11 years in prison, with an extended licence period, and made subject to various orders related to sex offender notification and prevention.
