The Met Office has issued a new thunderstorm warning for parts of Wales, specifically covering areas in south east Wales. The yellow warning includes forecasts of heavy rain, hail, and lightning, with showers and thunderstorms expected to move north and east across southern Britain into the evening, gradually clearing from the west.
This is the second consecutive day of thunderstorm warnings for parts of Wales, attributed to a series of low-pressure systems bringing unsettled weather to the region. The warning, effective until 3am on Wednesday, cautions of the potential for 20-30 mm of rain within 2-3 hours, with isolated areas possibly receiving 40-50 mm over a longer period. Hail and lightning are additional hazards, with a risk of temporary hail accumulations and gusty winds up to 40 mph in the south of the warning area.
Covered by the warning are Monmouthshire, Newport, and Torfaen, where impacts could include difficult driving conditions, road closures, the possibility of communities becoming cut off by flooded roads, delays or cancellations to public transport services, potential power cuts, and damage to buildings from floodwater, lightning, hail, or strong winds.
Looking ahead, the Met Office forecast for Wales on Wednesday anticipates a day of “sunshine and showers,” with lighter showers compared to Tuesday. Thursday through Saturday is projected to be drier initially, with showers returning by Saturday and a shift to colder temperatures with patchy fog and the potential for frost overnight.
