A devastated mother has shared the heart-wrenching journey of holding her baby boy in her arms as he passed away at just six months old. Lennon Smout, born in June 2018, was diagnosed with a birth defect known as congenital diaphragmatic hernia and spent his entire life at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool. Jessica Smout, 31, from Wrexham, was transferred to Liverpool Women’s Hospital during her pregnancy after a 12-week scan revealed that Lennon would be born with a “potentially life-threatening” condition. The statistics she received regarding her son’s survival rate were described as “heart-wrenching.”
Lennon’s uncle, Callum Broad, recounted the family’s experience, highlighting how they were informed during the 12-week scan that Lennon would face health challenges. Lennon was born and spent his entire life at Alder Hey, where Jessica, her husband Chris, and Jessica’s mum moved in to spend as much time as possible with him. Despite hopeful moments, it became clear that there was no cure for Lennon’s condition, leading them to transition to Claire House. Claire House provided vital support, visiting Jessica and her family weekly, offering guidance and care throughout their difficult journey.
Jessica shared the emotional loss of Lennon, who passed away in her arms at Claire House in December 2018. She praised Claire House for the comprehensive care and support they received, including specialist nurses and play specialists who helped create lasting memories with Lennon. In a gesture of appreciation, Callum participated in a charity Strictly Come Dancing event for Claire House, honouring Lennon’s memory and supporting the hospice’s essential services.
Callum’s involvement in the fundraiser, which raised £72,000, was a tribute to his nephew and a way to give back to Claire House for the invaluable support they provided. The event saw amateur dancers coming together to support the hospice’s services, such as counselling and support groups for bereaved families.
