The Welsh Government has responded to the plea for establishing a new dental school in Wales, which aimed to address the crisis within the dental industry. Campaigners argued that having a second dental school in the country would help alleviate the current challenges. Concerns were raised about the poor access to NHS dentists in Wales, especially in the north of the country.
Despite receiving cross-party support, the Welsh Government announced its inability to provide funding for a new dental school. Plaid Cymru’s Arfon MS, Siân Gwenllian, led a debate in the Senedd advocating for a dental training school in Bangor. She highlighted the need for improved dental services in north Wales, where dental practice vacancies are at a concerning level.
Various Members of the Senedd voiced their support for establishing a dental school in Bangor, citing the potential benefits for the region’s health, economy, and education. Labour and Conservative representatives also expressed the urgent need for more dentists across Wales. However, Wales’ health minister, Jeremy Miles, mentioned financial constraints as a significant hurdle in increasing the number of dental training places.
While there are currently 74 training places annually at Wales’ only dental school in Cardiff, expanding this capacity faces challenges due to financial limitations. Mr. Miles clarified that there are no immediate plans for a second dental school, but he did not rule out the possibility in the future should financial circumstances improve. He emphasised that enhancing dental training alone is not sufficient to improve NHS care access and highlighted ongoing contract reforms.
