A mother in Wales alerted to a “small cloud” in her baby’s eye discovered it was a serious condition more common in older people. Lotti McKenna, 33, noticed the milky mark in her daughter Beatrix’s eye a few weeks after her birth in September 2023. At 10 weeks old, Beatrix was diagnosed with a congenital cataract in her left eye, a rare condition that can lead to blindness without prompt surgery.
Beatrix underwent a two-hour surgery to remove the lens in her left eye, now relying on specially adapted glasses or contact lenses. Had the diagnosis come a few weeks earlier, the chances of preventing blindness would have been higher. Lotti and her husband, Ben, initially expected a quicker resolution, only to learn that Beatrix might need to wait until she is at least eight years old for an artificial lens.
The family shared their story to raise awareness about childhood cataracts, emphasising the importance of early diagnosis. Beatrix’s situation highlights the urgency of prompt treatment to prevent long-term vision issues. The couple commended the care at Great Ormond Street Hospital and pledged to run a marathon to fundraise for the hospital.
