Not fixing a broken phone screen could hurt more than your pocket, according to a report by Wales Online. Data from MoneySuperMarket highlights that five million individuals in the UK are currently living with a damaged phone screen. The research showcases that people’s perceptions of an individual with a broken phone screen shift if the issue is left unaddressed for over six weeks.
More than a quarter of individuals surveyed found having a cracked phone screen to be ’embarrassing’, with 12% stating they would decline a second date with someone in such a situation. The research further reveals that 56% of gadget insurance claims within the last year were due to shattered screens. University student Lauren, 20, shared her experience, highlighting how she refrained from pursuing a relationship due to her date’s unrepaired cracked screen, which she felt represented broader issues in his life related to tidiness and self-care.
David McDermottroe, an insurance expert at MoneySuperMarket, noted that nearly all UK adults (96%) own smartphones and emphasised how a cracked screen can occur unexpectedly with a simple slip or drop. This study sheds light on the social implications and financial costs of neglecting a broken phone screen, indicating a broader impact beyond just the device’s functionality.
