A refrigerated van from grocery business Ocado was severely damaged after colliding with a low bridge in Derby city centre. The incident caused the van to split almost in half, with the back portion hanging off and groceries inside exposed. The collision, which occurred on Tuesday, September 3, resulted in substantial damage to the top of the 2.5-metre tall bridge, leaving noticeable scuff marks. This particular bridge has been a recurrent issue for vehicles, as a similar incident happened in 2017 when a box van lost its roof after hitting the same underpass, prompting safety measures like height warning chains to be reinstalled in 2018.
Ocado has since issued a statement regarding the incident and the driver’s well-being. A spokesperson confirmed that neither the driver nor any other road users sustained injuries, emphasising safety as their top priority. Founded in Hertfordshire in 2000, Ocado is an online grocery store that delivers a wide range of food, drinks, and household goods to customers across the UK. The company was acquired by Marks & Spencer in 2019.
