Feared to be among the hardest hit are pensioners with finance expert Martin Lewis warning that many will be £500 worse off due to the loss of both the cost-of-living payment and winter fuel payment. Young families also face a tricky balancing act as they attempt to keep children warm and fed while also pulling off the perfect Christmas.
While support is available from the UK Government’s Department of Work and Pensions such as pension credit and the warm home discount scheme, many might overlook approaching their local council for additional help. Many councils across Wales are offering residents financial aid or advice which could help ease pressure for some. A number of councils help deliver projects to make homes more energy efficient while many others provide warm hubs and some form of financial advice.
One council offers a scheme which can help improve the effectiveness of heating systems. Wales Online contacted each council in Wales to see exactly what support is being offered this winter. Of the 22 local authorities in Wales, 11 told us how they aim to help residents make ends meet.
For example, Torfaen council recently introduced a free heating scheme called the ‘domestic heating energy efficiency scheme’, funded by the UK Government, which works by improving the effectiveness of heating systems to save energy and money. Cardiff council will offer ‘warm welcome spaces’ in hubs and distribute warm packs to vulnerable residents. Conwy council offers a government grant programme for low-income and vulnerable people living in cold homes.
Swansea council partners with energy companies to provide access to funding for energy-efficiency improvements. Carmarthenshire council is developing plans to assist residents, while Neath Port Talbot council provides a website for cost-of-living help and promotes pension credit. Anglesey council offers assistance with off-grid fuel and specialist referrals for welfare benefits.
Gwynedd council delivers energy-saving measures to residents for free and offers energy advice, heated throws, and fuel vouchers. Powys council and Caerphilly council also have energy-saving schemes to help households. Rhondda Cynon Taf council offers various schemes including heating upgrades.
