A man has passed away while serving as an inmate at HMP Cardiff, as confirmed by authorities. Matthew Coles, aged 41, died at the Category B jail on Tuesday, September 24. The cause of Mr. Coles’ death has not been disclosed, nor has the nature of the offence for which he was imprisoned. The Prison Service has acknowledged the death and stated that, as part of protocol for all deaths in custody, the Prison and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation.
South Wales Police have also been requested to provide a statement regarding the incident. HMP Cardiff is a category B men’s prison operated by the Prison Service, accommodating approximately 800 prisoners spread across six units with a mix of single and shared cells. A spokesperson for the Prison Service expressed condolences, saying, “Matthew Coles passed away at HMP Cardiff on Tuesday, September 24th. Our thoughts remain with his friends and family. As with all deaths in custody, the Prison and Probation Ombudsman will investigate.”
