A Senedd member is currently under investigation for leaving a negative review on eBay regarding a pair of crystal sherry glasses priced at £9.99. The Senedd’s standards commissioner, Douglas Bain, initiated a formal probe following a complaint from the seller who accused the politician of posting misleading comments that questioned their “integrity, reliability and honesty.” The report was released on October 17, detailing the complaint against the unnamed politician who contested the likeness of the glasses to the seller’s description, leading to a critical review.
The seller raised concerns that their reputation on eBay could be damaged by what they perceived as dishonest feedback from the purchasing member. Central to the disagreement was whether the crystal glasses, purchased in January, were signed with an etching of the word “Waterford” or an image of a seahorse. Over the course of a year-long investigation, Mr Bain engaged an independent expert to examine the contentious glassware in search of the truth.
Despite efforts to resolve the issue, including the seller offering replacement glasses and the politician breaking one of the original glasses, disagreements persisted. An independent expert concluded that the item was a genuine Waterford glass, although some discrepancies remained. Mr Bain ultimately found that, even if the feedback was factually incorrect, it was honestly given and did not breach the Senedd’s code of conduct.
The standards commissioner’s office revealed a significant increase in complaints received, with the investigation into this matter highlighting the intricacies involved in such disputes. The standards committee determined that the Senedd member had not violated the code of conduct, resulting in the matter being resolved without reprimand.
