A 21-year-old student, Alexandra Angeles Caycho, who was battling an ‘almost impossible’ cancer diagnosis, has sadly passed away after raising £165,000 for her final journey back to Peru. Alexandra, a Fine Art and Design graduate from Lancaster University, initially thought she had a rugby injury before being diagnosed with stage three pancreatic cancer. This summer, doctors informed her that she had only ‘days to weeks left to live’.
Earlier this month, Alexandra’s ‘last wish’ was granted, and she managed to return to Peru after several costly flights with medical assistance to spend her final days with her family. On Saturday, September 14, her boyfriend announced the heartbreaking news of her passing.
Alexandra had relocated from Peru to attend university in Lancaster in 2021. After experiencing pain and alarming symptoms, she was diagnosed with stage four cancer. Despite the shock of her diagnosis at a young age, Alexandra bravely fought through treatments. However, her health rapidly deteriorated, leading her to share her struggles with her online community.
With the support of friends, Alexandra set up an online fundraiser to cover the estimated cost of an air ambulance back to Peru. Thanks to the generosity of donors, she was able to make the journey, which included several stops due to her condition. By early September, Alexandra had safely arrived in Peru and was surrounded by loved ones as she spent her final moments in a place where she felt at peace.
In a heartfelt update, Alexandra’s boyfriend expressed gratitude to everyone who supported her journey back home. The community’s contributions made her final wish a reality, allowing her to be with her family during her last days. Tragically, Alexandra passed away at 12.30 a.m. local time on September 14, as confirmed by her boyfriend’s post on the fundraising page.
Alexandra’s courageous battle and the outpouring of support from her community serve as a poignant reminder of the strength and compassion that can arise during times of adversity. May she rest in peace.
