The tangled nightmare of finding the right charger to fit your phone might soon end in the UK. The UK Government is now considering whether to follow the EU’s lead in a bid to cut down on e-waste, with the public being asked for views on the potential benefits of switching to a universal charger.
The hunt for various charging cables for multiple devices might soon be over as the UK Government contemplates a shift in regulations to allow a universal charger. Two years ago, the European Union mandated USB-C ports for a wide array of electronic gadgets, enabling most to be charged with a single type of charger. Initially, the UK Government dismissed the idea of implementing similar measures but is now seeking public opinion on the potential advantages.
In 2020, reports indicated that EU consumers purchased approximately 420 million electronic devices and typically had three chargers per person. Despite this, finding compatible chargers was still a common issue. Companies in the EU are required to comply with the new standards by December.
Jozef Sikela, who was the Minister for Industry and Trade for the European Council in 2022, commented, “We all have at least three mobile phone chargers at home. Looking for the right charger, either at home or at work, can be quite annoying. On top of this, these chargers amount to 11,000 tonnes of e-waste every year. Having a charger that fits multiple devices will save money and time and also helps us reduce electronic waste.”
The news coincides with findings from Recycle Your Electricals that UK households have around 38,449 tonnes of copper in discarded electrical items. Scott Butler, executive director of Recycle Your Electricals, stated, “We all have our stashes of unused or broken electricals, but it’s time we realised the value and power of the silent majority and the hidden treasures inside our homes.”
