Tech tycoon Mike Lynch’s cause of death has been revealed, following the tragic sinking of the Bayesian superyacht off the coast of Sicily. The billionaire entrepreneur, aged 59, drowned, while three other British nationals lost their lives in the disaster. Among the deceased were Lynch’s daughter Hannah, aged 18, Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, aged 70, and his wife Judy Bloomer, aged 71.
The vessel sank rapidly for unknown reasons between 4.15am and 4.45am on August 19, according to Detective Superintendent Mike Brown of Suffolk Police. Search efforts commenced immediately, with the bodies later found in the vessel’s cabins. The time of death for all four individuals was recorded as 5am on the same day. Inquests into their deaths were opened and adjourned until April 15 next year in Ipswich.
The superyacht was located 0.8 nautical miles from the coast of Porticello, with a total of 22 people on board, consisting of 12 crew members and 10 guests. Seven individuals tragically lost their lives. While Dr Lynch’s cause of death was determined as drowning following a post-mortem examination, investigations into the deaths of the other victims are ongoing.
The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) is conducting an inquiry to understand the circumstances surrounding the sinking, while Italian authorities have initiated their independent criminal investigations. Dr Lynch, his daughter, and the Bloomers resided in London and Kent respectively. The boat trip had been intended as a celebratory event following Dr Lynch’s recent acquittal in a high-profile fraud case in the US.
