DVLA Warning as Millions of Drivers May Need to Pay a Fee
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has issued a warning to millions of UK drivers, notifying them that they may need to pay a small fee. The DVLA, responsible for issuing driving licences and overseeing motorists, has recently alerted an estimated two million people who take their cars abroad annually.
Many drivers may be unaware of the necessary procedures before driving overseas, leading the DVLA to provide clarification. The alert states, “If you’re planning to drive abroad, you might need an international driving permit (IDP). IDPs are now exclusively available from participating PayPoint stores across the UK.” A link included in the alert offers further information.
The message continues to emphasize the importance of an IDP, stating that this internationally recognised document is required when driving overseas. IDPs are particularly useful in countries where photographic proof of ID is necessary, or where a UK licence alone may not suffice. There are three different types of IDPs, and the relevant one depends on the countries the driver intends to visit.
To obtain an IDP, a driver must pay an application fee of £5.50 and hold a full valid GB or Northern Ireland driving licence, either a photocard or an older paper licence, along with a recent passport photo. For those with an older paper licence, a valid passport is also required. Unfortunately, individuals with driving licences from the Channel Islands, Isle of Man, foreign countries, or diplomatic licences are ineligible to apply.
Drivers can acquire an IDP in person from specific shops with PayPoint services, potentially needing one for each country they plan to visit. Drivers are advised to familiarise themselves with the driving regulations of each visited country, including local speed limits, drink-driving laws, and any necessary additional equipment like emission stickers, headlight converter stickers, and a UK sticker.
