The Cardiff and Vale University health board has reported a “huge spike” in patients over the last 72 hours, prompting the hospital to advise people to only visit the emergency unit if absolutely necessary. The health board has stated that this surge in patients has caused “significant pressure” at both University Hospital of Wales and University Hospital Llandough.
In a statement, the health board urged the public to use the emergency department only for emergencies due to the long wait times for both the emergency unit and hospital admissions. They highlighted that over 200 more people presented to the emergency unit than usual, leading to extended waiting periods. People were advised to seek healthcare support from NHS 111 Wales for advice, guidance, and appointment booking for out-of-hours or Minor Injuries Unit visits. Additionally, individuals were encouraged to reach out to their Primary Care team or visit the Primary Care service locator on the health board’s website.
