Welsh airport that most people have never flown from now being run by new group

A new group has taken charge of Swansea Airport following discussions with the site’s owner, Swansea Council. The Swansea Airport Stakeholders Alliance is now overseeing operations temporarily after the previous leaseholder agreed to surrender their lease. The airport will remain operational, and the council intends to begin the process of finding a long-term tenant. Council leader Rob Stewart expressed happiness with the newly-formed alliance’s involvement and their commitment to the airport’s success.

Council joint deputy leader David Hopkins highlighted plans to seek a permanent solution through a competitive bidding process, in which the alliance and others can participate. The council assured that the airport would remain open without additional costs to taxpayers. Issues with the previous tenant prompted the end of the existing lease. The airport, spanning 450 acres, has a history dating back to its requisition during World War II and subsequent civilian use.

Bob Oliver, chairman of the alliance, acknowledged the dedication of all involved in securing a prosperous future for the airport. The group’s initial focus is to assess the current state of the airport and begin revitalisation efforts to provide benefits to Swansea and its residents. Former leaseholder Roy Thomas expressed interest in applying for a lease once the council commences the search for a long-term tenant. The airport’s activities, which include private pilots, flying schools, and a skydiving company, continue despite the official revocation of its Civil Aviation Authority licence.

The airport’s revival efforts have gained momentum with the reopening of a cafĂ© earlier this year. The Swansea Airport Stakeholders Alliance is actively engaged in restoring the airport to its former glory, aiming to create a welcoming destination that contributes socially, environmentally, and economically to Swansea. The alliance’s leadership, along with the council’s partnership, are pivotal in steering Swansea Airport towards a bright and promising future.
