A woman with a “violent temper” has been convicted of hitting her partner with a vodka bottle and a half-pint glass during a heavy drinking session, a court in Swansea has heard. Charlotte Cotterrell, 25, who has a history of violent offences, was already on a community order for assaulting two police officers at the time of the incident.
The court was faced with the decision of whether to impose a short custodial sentence or a more constructive alternative to help the defendant. The judge handed Cotterrell a suspended sentence, emphasising that the opportunity was given for her to turn her life around.
According to the prosecution, the altercation occurred during a social gathering at Cotterrell’s flat in Pontardawe. The argument escalated, leading to Cotterrell assaulting her partner with the vodka bottle and glass, causing injuries. Despite the victim’s attempt to reconcile, another argument ensued, resulting in the police being called.
Cotterrell, who had pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH), was sentenced to 18 months in prison suspended for 18 months. In addition to this, she was required to undergo mental health treatment and a rehabilitation course and was issued with a restraining order against contacting her ex-partner for three years.
It was highlighted in court that Cotterrell suffered from borderline personality disorder, and her barrister noted the correlation between her behaviour and compliance with medication and support services. The judge expressed concern over Cotterrell’s violent temper and readiness to act aggressively at the slightest provocation.
The sentencing aimed to provide Cotterrell with an opportunity to make positive changes in her life, with the judge emphasising that the decision whether to seize this chance lay with the defendant. The case sheds light on the serious consequences of alcohol-fuelled violence and the importance of seeking help for those struggling with their mental health.
