A couple’s £1.85m farm home in Norfolk is up for sale after a dispute with a neighbour led to a planning row that cost them £90,000 in legal fees. Richard and Victoria Kerrison found themselves in this situation after their neighbour complained that their holiday let on the property was too noisy. The neighbour, a screenwriter whose work has been acknowledged by Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company, initially raised concerns about loud music and children playing on the property.
The issue escalated when North Norfolk Council and the Planning Inspectorate determined that the Kerrisons did not have the appropriate permissions to operate parts of their property as holiday lets. Despite the couple’s argument that planning permission was not necessary for holiday lets, they faced challenges in obtaining approvals. Even with support from another neighbour, Lady Anwen Hurt, widow of BAFTA-winning actor John Hurt, the Kerrisons were unable to overcome the planning restrictions.
The Kerrisons had purchased Roundabout Farm in 1997 and transformed it into a peaceful retreat for holidaymakers. However, the dispute with their neighbour began in 2019 over noise disturbances and water supply issues. The council subsequently informed the Kerrisons of planning breaches at the farm, particularly regarding the use of the Courtyard Barn as a holiday let without proper permission.
While the Planning Inspectorate eventually ruled in favour of the couple for some aspects of the property, they were directed to cease using the Courtyard Barn as a holiday let by November. As a result of the ongoing dispute and loss of earnings, the Kerrisons have decided to sell the property. The couple expressed sadness over the situation, highlighting the impact on their business and livelihood.
The Kerrisons have endured a challenging legal battle and significant financial strain as a consequence of the dispute.
