Gut complaint could raise your Parkinson’s risk by 75 per cent says study

An alert has been issued regarding a gut issue that could significantly increase the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease, according to a recent study. The link between our diet and overall health is well-known, with unhealthy eating habits potentially leading to various health issues like obesity, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. In recent years, researchers have also explored the impact of gut health on overall well-being. Studies have shown that an unhealthy gut can increase the chances of developing autoimmune problems, diabetes, and even cancer.

A new study published in JAMA Network Open has revealed a significant association between damage to the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract and a 75 percent higher risk of being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in the future. Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that primarily affects movement-related neurons, leading to symptoms like tremors, slowness, and muscle stiffness.

The study, conducted by a team that followed 9,350 patients without a history of Parkinson’s disease, focused on evaluating upper GI tract damage through endoscopy with biopsy. Patients with mucosal damage, classified as erosions, ulcers, or acid-induced injuries, showed a higher prevalence of Parkinson’s disease compared to those without such damage. Furthermore, these patients were more likely to have a history of conditions like Helicobacter pylori infection, use of stomach acid medications, and gastric issues like GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease).

Lead researcher Trisha Pasricha from the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre in Boston highlighted that many patients with Parkinson’s disease experience symptoms related to the upper GI tract years before their diagnosis. The study underscored the significance of monitoring patients with upper GI mucosal damage as they were found to have a 76 percent greater risk of developing Parkinson’s disease.

According to the NHS, the exact causes of Parkinson’s disease are still unknown, with ongoing research focusing on genetic and environmental factors. As the study emphasizes the importance of identifying gut biomarkers, timely detection and treatment of conditions like H pylori infection and upper GI tract damage could play a crucial role in early recognition and potentially intervening against Parkinson’s disease.
